FAST CARS: engineering a laser spectroscopic technique for rapid identification of bacterial spores.
Airborne contaminants, e.g., bacterial spores, are usually analyzed by time-consuming microscopic, chemical, and biological assays. Current research into real-time laser spectroscopic detectors of such contaminants is based on e.g., resonance fluorescence. The present approach derives from recent experiments in which atoms and molecules are prepared by one (or more) coherent laser(s) and probed...
متن کاملA rapid staining technique for the detection of the initiation of germination of bacterial spores.
AIMS We propose to apply the Wirtz-Conklin staining technique to evaluate spore germination. METHODS AND RESULTS Spores at different stages of germination were stained with modified spore stain (Wirtz-Conklin) and evaluated for staining properties. Bacillus spores suspended in deionized water, which does not support germination, stained greenish-blue. Spores suspended in germination enhancers...
متن کاملA ranking technique for fast audio identification
We introduce a novel ranking technique for fast and robust audio identification. In this approach, identification is performed by evaluating certain parts of correlation sequences. Starting from a general framework for content-based audio identification, we show how to integrate our new algorithm into a fast index-based search algorithm. We demonstrate the capabilities of our approach by consid...
متن کاملRapid inactivation of bacterial spores using plasma activated water: development, species identification and sporicidal mechanism
This study demonstrates that rapid inactivation (> 6 log reductions in 10 seconds) of C. difficile spores on dry surfaces can be achieved using plasma activated water (PAW) generated in situ or in a form of fine droplets. The concentration of peroxynitrite and pH level in the PAW likely play a critical role in the rapid sporicidal efficacy, leading to spore coat damage and membrane integrity loss.
متن کاملReagentless identification of single bacterial spores in aqueous solution by confocal laser tweezers Raman spectroscopy.
We demonstrate that optical trapping combined with confocal Raman spectroscopy using a single laser source is a powerful tool for the rapid identification of micrometer-sized particles in an aqueous environment. Optical trapping immobilizes the particle while maintaining it in the center of the laser beam path and within the laser focus, thus maximizing the collection of its Raman signals. The ...
